Content of the Summer School

Quantum computing as a material challenge


Quantum computing could enable exponential speedups classes of problems by exploiting superposition and entanglement in the manipulation of quantum bits (qubits). The leading quantum systems that can be used include trapped ions, superconducting qubits, and spins in semiconductors.

 The lecture series delivers an overview of the state-of-the-art of quantum computing with the focus on spin qubits. What are the benefits and challenges of a quantum computer? How could a scalable architecture of a quantum chip look like and how could it be operated? What semiconductor system is best suited and what are the demands on its quality?

 

The course will cover the following areas in detail:

  • What is a qubit and how many qubits do we need to realize a quantum computer?
  • What are the functional blocks of semiconductor quantum computer?
  • What semiconductor material issues need to be solved?
  • What could be the architecture of a semiconductor quantum computer?

  • The Summer School is addressed to employees of the Leibniz-Institut für Kristallzüchtung, but also students and PhDs from external institutes are welcome. As space is limited the number of attendees is limited to 50.
  • The Summer School is free of charge, but all travel and accommodation cost must be solely borne by the participants.
