IKZ Doctoral Student Stefan Püschel wins Optica Student Travel Grant at CLEO Europe Conference 2023

Stefan Püschel was honored with the Optica Student Travel Grant endowed with 500 € at the CLEO/Europe-EQEC 2023 conference. This price is awarded to the best-rated student contributions at this largest European conference in the field of new frontiers in lasers, photonics and optical science. Given the total of 1759 technical contributions to the 2023 edition of this conference, the travel grant is highly competitive.

The biannual CLEO/Europe-EQEC conference took place from 26th to 30th June 2023 in Munich, Germany. The conference brings together the brightest minds in the world of optics and photonics. It serves as a platform for researchers, academics, and industry professionals to share their latest findings.

Stefan Püschel is a third-year doctoral student in the junior research group of Dr. Hiroki Tanaka at the Leibniz-Institut für Kristallzüchtung (IKZ). In his contribution "Laser Cooling of an Yb:KY3F10 crystal by 42 K" he reported on laser cooling of solids, a technique that allows to cool crystals using laser radiation. Excitation of Yb-ions embedded in a crystal matrix at wavelengths longer than its average fluorescence wavelength removes heat in the form of so-called anti-Stokes fluorescence. Stefan’s contribution reported on the first laser cooling in Yb:KYF. At excitation power levels of 4 W the crystal was cooled to temperatures as low as -26 °C by laser irradiation.
