The biannual CLEO/Europe-EQEC conference took place from 26th to 30th June 2023 in Munich, Germany. The conference brings together the brightest minds in the world of optics and photonics. It serves as a platform for researchers, academics, and industry professionals to share their latest findings.
Stefan Püschel is a third-year doctoral student in the junior research group of Dr. Hiroki Tanaka at the Leibniz-Institut für Kristallzüchtung (IKZ). In his contribution "Laser Cooling of an Yb:KY3F10 crystal by 42 K" he reported on laser cooling of solids, a technique that allows to cool crystals using laser radiation. Excitation of Yb-ions embedded in a crystal matrix at wavelengths longer than its average fluorescence wavelength removes heat in the form of so-called anti-Stokes fluorescence. Stefan’s contribution reported on the first laser cooling in Yb:KYF. At excitation power levels of 4 W the crystal was cooled to temperatures as low as -26 °C by laser irradiation.
