The Zentrum für Lasermaterialien-Kristalle (Center for Laser Materials-Crystals, ZLM-K) is currently installed at the IKZ in the framework of the BMBF-project EQuila on the research and qualification of innovative laser materials and crystals. The ZLM-K will be equipped to characterize and qualify rare-earth and transition metal doped oxide and fluoride laser crystals and other optical materials with respect to laser applications. The research will be performed in close collaboration with the project partners at the Ferdinand-Braun-Institut (FBH), where the Zentrum für Lasermaterialien-Halbleiter will be installed, which will for example supply diode laser pump sources. In this way a world-leading research environment is established, which allows to set up laser demonstrators utilizing gain materials and pump sources fabricated on site.

As of March 13th, 2017, Dr. Christian Kränkel will lead the ZLM. After studying physics and performing his PhD-thesis in the research group of Prof. Günter Huber at the Institut für Laser-Physik (ILP) of the Universität Hamburg Dr. Kränkel spent two years as a postdoctoral researcher in the group of Prof. Ursula Keller at the ETH Zurich. In 2010 he went back to the ILP to become a junior research group leader, where he achieved his habilitation degree in February 2017.
