Blue laser light earns IKZ Ph.D. candidate Ole Hahn an International Young Scientist Award

314 milliwatts of output power and a laser efficiency of 37 percent: IKZ Ph.D. candidate Ole Hahn presented impressive results in the development of more powerful cyan-blue lasers at the OPTICA Laser Congress 2026 in Vilnius. For his presentation, he was awarded first prize in the “Materials” category of the “ASSL Best Student Oral Presenter” competition.

Lasers that emit light directly in the visible spectral range are a key research focus at the Leibniz-Institut für Kristallzüchtung (IKZ). As part of his doctoral research at the Center for Laser Materials, supervised by Dr. Christian Kränkel, Ole Hahn is exploring the potential of novel crystal materials for developing more efficient laser sources.

His award-winning presentation, “Power Scaling of Blue 495 nm Pr:BYF Lasers,” focused on lasers based on praseodymium-doped barium-yttrium-fluoride crystals (Pr:BYF). Achieving an output power of up to 314 milliwatts and a laser efficiency of 37 percent, Hahn demonstrated record performance at a wavelength of 495 nanometers. These results highlight the potential of this crystal material for efficient, high-power laser sources in the cyan-blue spectral range. Ole Hahn presented his findings at the OPTICA Laser Congress, held from October 11 to 15, 2026, in Vilnius, Lithuania. More than 550 experts from the international laser research community came together to exchange insights into the latest advances in laser science and technology.

With the “ASSL Best Student Oral Presenter Prize,” OPTICA recognizes outstanding scientific presentations by early-career researchers. Winners are selected through a multi-stage process that assesses the scientific quality and relevance of the research as well as the clarity and effectiveness of its presentation. This year, the first prize in the “Materials” category was endowed with 440 euros.
