Under the motto “Light, Matter, Information”, Leibniz Section D contributes in many ways to science-based solutions to important societal challenges through its research and development work. The R&D work covers the spectrum from basic and applied research to prototypical solutions; excellent science, technology transfer and education are important goals. Leibniz Section D comprises 23 Leibniz Institutes throughout Germany with approximately 3,000 employees and a budget of approximately €600 million (of which approximately €200 million is third-party funding).
The team of spokespersons sees it as a special task - in close cooperation with the Leibniz Presidium and other Leibniz sections - to achieve strong involvement of the Leibniz Institutes in the German government's “High-Tech Agenda Germany”. The Leibniz Institutes have unique scientific and technological expertise in the identified key technologies (artificial intelligence, microelectronics, quantum technologies, biotechnologies, fusion and mobility) and in the strategic research fields (aerospace, health research, security and defence research, marine, climate and sustainability research, and humanities and social sciences). By complementarily linking Leibniz expertise with university and non-university partners as well as industry, basic research results can be accelerated for economic and social exploitation.
